Holistic Health Book: 5 Important Tips to Guide Your Purchase

Holistic health books are numerous. There will likely be many more to be published because of the public’s increasing frustration with the shortcomings of conventional medicine. Here are 4 important tips to guide your purchase.

1) Credentials. Many of the holistic health books are written either by celebrities or what I label as medical defectors (MDs who have recognized the public’s growing interest in holistic care). These unqualified authors have little if any formal training or certification to be be writing about or practicing holistic health care. They will claim to have taken some minimal class hours, but usually from un-credentialed schools.

2) Experience. Seek authors who have “been in the trenches”, having many years of personal interaction with patients in a holistic health facility. These professionals will be Doctors of Chiropractic, Naturopaths, Clinical Nutritionists, and Acupuncturists. They will be able to share stories of both typical and unique cases from their “school of hard-knocks”.

3) Thoroughness. Authentic holistic health care recognizes that a human being is more than just physical, that we are also spiritual, mental, and emotional. All these aspects need to be addressed in a comprehensive way for optimum health and wellness. Focusing on just one, even if done naturally, is not true holistic health care.

4) Passion. Anybody can write a book especially nowadays with the prevalence of ghost-writers, word processing, vanity publishers and book coaches. Look for an author that has a profound story to tell, that is motivated not by money or fame, but has a sincere desire to help mankind as a higher calling. Think back to your favorite teacher from your elementary school days, and compare them to the many other teachers you had. I’d bet that favorite teacher had passion.

5) Style. A warm human touch is essential to healing and is a cornerstone of holistic health. This can be conveyed by an author who can write in a conversational, easy-going style that presents practical information. Side notes with anecdotes, humor, and helpful tidbits really warm up a book and come close to the beneficial warmth of a caring doctor. The best books create the feeling that the author is talking directly to you.

Facts and figures have their place in health care, but lately there is increasing evidence that much research is tainted with corruption. Authors that base the majority of their material on scientific evidence are short-changing their readers by neglecting the value of clinical observations.

Many of the holistic health books also play on the attraction of extremism. In other words the authors purposely write about very unusual and unique methods, unproven both clinically and scientifically, knowing that this type content attracts extraordinary attention. Readers need to be aware of these covert marketing techniques.

Another commonality is that many of the books are written with the intention of driving clients to a facility, clinic or providers office as a sort of bait and switch scam. Authentic authors will have little or no attached self-serving benefit to the information they provide.

So, be wary of what you are choosing in regards to a holistic health book. Your health and well-being depend on it.
